The victoriananursery site is an utterly charming family business that sells plants and seeds it grows onsite. That's an old-fashioned concept, and victoriananursery's owners, the Shirleys, are sufficiently old-fashioned to have grown their plants since they established their nursery in 1972 without the aid of any chemical pesticides, fungicides or fertilizers. Their land was originally used to grow grains, and it took the Shirley family a great deal of effort to locate such an eminently suitable plot, located in Ashford (Kent). In fact, the history of the victoriananursery makes a fascinating read, although it's neither well written, nor does it relate exciting or unusual events, nor are any of the characters in the story (who are all, of course, members of the Shirley family) in any way outstanding. The beauty of the history is simple: in it, one hears the voice of the British farmer, subspecies nursery gardener, adapting to the late twentieth century. The founding Shirleys did not reach horticulture, the victoriananursery establishment, or the Kent location by the most direct route, and reading about their colorful journey is a tremendous amount of fun. Mr. Shirley's entrepreneurial streak manifested itself early in childhood sales of mice and water plants, and accordingly he studied botany and zoology at the local polytechnic. As a young man, he worked for a market gardener, a vendor of ornamental plants and a seed manager before meeting the future Mrs. Shirley and started a side business in retail seeds with her (the germ, as it were, of victoriananursery). Mr. Shirley fancies himself a bit of a gay dog at this point in his life, with all the freedom appurtenant upon ten pounds a week and a manager's post, but the reader already sees, wound about him quite plainly, the toils of heart and land that have bound so many Englishmen before him.
It is now a foregone conclusion that Mr. Shirley's wanderings through the concrete industry will leave him in search of land to call his own, and his struggles with various authorities in pursuit of his nursery business are epically comical. There are the dreaded parking restrictions that impede his hawking of home-grown bulbs, the local aldermen who go after him for operating a business out of his home, and other villains too numerous to mention, but need we add that good triumphs?
