The TES site claims to be the "largest network of teachers in the world." Its home page offers site users a way to upload and share their teaching resources, a list of almost one thousand jobs to peruse, and a number of user forums on which to post comments (the most popular TES forums are given as Design and Technology, Drama and Performing Arts, Scotland - Opinion, Opinion (which seems like an odd division, but there it is), Personal, Cookery, Entertainment, and Teaching Overseas. A peek at TES' Teaching Overseas forum shows discussions in which a newbie asks the old-timers what it's like to teach in Brunei or America, a question about CIS inspection standards is answered, information about countries that accept PGCE Primary certification is provided, advice about the VIF program is requested, and even one asking the plaintive question "How long until you stop feeling homesick?" There's a limited amount of time the TES site will continue to engage the interest of anyone not somehow involved with the teaching profession, but that's obviously no drawback: anyone can sign up as a user, but in practice few non-teachers do. TES' concept of a nationwide community of teachers offering each other peer support is very appealing, both for the inexperienced ones who desperately need advice and for the stalwart veterans who enjoy themselves dispensing it, although that must be rather a busman's holiday for them.
TES is owned by a company called TSL Education, and TSL's lofty mission is to raise "standards of education" by matching teachers with jobs, then furnishing those teachers with "tools to be the very best" possible, and that's a personal best rather than living up to a particular standard. That translates into a jobs and networking site for teachers, which is exactly what TES offers, and according to parent TSL, TES can boast one and a half million members in almost two hundred different countries, and over a whopping ninety thousand teaching resources are shared by members on the site. And TSL puts the number of jobs advertised each year at fifty thousand, another very impressive number.
