Strand Palace Hotel (Strandpalacehotel.co.uk)
The strandpalacehotel site belongs, of course, to the famous hotel of that name, which has been a fixture in London since 1909. strandpalacehotel occupies a ground floor plus six upper stories where Exeter Street meets the Strand, in the center of West End. It absorbed the neighboring Haxell's Hotel in the 1920s and acquired an Art Deco look in 1928, now unfortunately lost in a 1980s renovation effort. The revolving doors can still be seen at the Victoria and Albert Museum, as examples of fine architectural detail. What has not changed is the establishment's sound reputation: one look at the square stone facade tells you the strandpalacehotel retains its solid aura of respectability and quiet fashion. The original owner or the strandpalacehotel, Lyons Hotel Group, sold out to a company called Forte in 1976, and the property's current owner is London & Regional. The strandpalacehotel advertises its proximity to "Leicester Square, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Trafalgar Square, and the London Eye," but given the ubiquity of underground stations nearby (Covent Garden, Charing Cross, Embankment, Holborn and so on) and its fortunate central location, strandpalacehotel is reasonably close to everything London has to offer.
You can imagine what sort of top-flight catered food the strandpalacehotel serves, and there are several restaurants in which to sample it. One is the Strand Carvery, which bills itself as an "original London carvery," which point requires some explanation. As we all know, a carvery serves meat that is sliced off the larger cut at the diners' tables. The joints, roasts and so on, some quite large, are wheeled around the dining area by waiters who do the carving, and the customer specifies which portion he prefers. The practice of carving to suit the customer's taste is as old as the food service industry, so what the strandpalacehotel means when it advertises its relatively new restaurant as "original" is the method of serving the meat from the mobile cart, rather than taking the food orders and returning with the requested plates. Some modern carveries even (horror of horrors) let the customer walk up to the meat, which is the reverse of the usual process, and hack away, but fortunately the strandpalacehotel does not.
