Yes, this store.drmartens site is owned by the world-renowned Dr. Martens shoe and boot company that began in Northampton, and very odd that formal "doctor" will sound to the American ear, which is accustomed to calling these beloved stompers just plain "Doc Martens." Anyone who has ever passed the time of day with that creature of the 1990s and beyond, the "gutter punk," will know what the Doc Martens line looks like. Come to think of it, anyone who has ever had the pleasure of sitting through the Kubrick classic film "Clockwork Orange" has also become familiar with them, because the boots Alex and his droogs wear to do their merciless kicking look exactly like Doc Martens. Doc Martens have a curious history, because they started life in 1901 as that epitome of stylistic conformity, the English work boot from the Midlands, which was then the center of the British shoemaking industry. The eponymous doctor did not come into the picture until he and his partner placed an advertisement in a trade magazine for their new "air-cushioned sole," and that advertisement was answered by the Northampton manufacturer. Doctor and shoemaker joined hands, and the first pair of Doc Martens appeared in 1960.
Then a genuinely unexpected twist occurred: somehow the sartorial homage paid by skinheads to the British working man fixed upon the Doc Martens boot as the perfect expression of their personal style, eminently well suited to the fisticuffs for which they were to become known. According to the store.drmartens site, which contains a wealth of company history that is well worth reading in its entirety, Doc Martens reached the mass media by the good offices of Who guitarist Pete Townshend, who defied the Carnaby Street trend to wear Doc Martens onstage. The shoe passed from skinheads to Townshend to punks, ska fans, and on down the line until it's impossible to say who will not be seen in Doc Martens today. The boots have true universal appeal, because of the irresistible combination of cut and stitching with the comfortable sole and vivid colors (racing blue, bottle green, cherry red) available in sturdy leather.
