The spirito site is branded with the names of two related lines of women's clothing, Artigiano and the eponymous Spirito de Artigiano. The word "artigiano" is, of course, Italian for "artisan," although honesty requires the following disclosure: the word "nonna," meaning "grandmother," is much more aptly descriptive of these garments. Artigiano offers basic pensioner clothing for ladies in sizes 8-24, and Spirito de Artigiano offers cover-that-grandmother clothing (more voluminous designs) in sizes 16-28. And given the stylistic confines of that aesthetic, spirito's clothing is very attractive indeed. Anyone who works at a conservative office, in fact, where acceptable adjectives for work wear are "demure," "restrained," and "ladylike," will find the spirito site very useful indeed, because that is all it provides. There are two schools of thought concerning heftier women: one is exemplified by the saying "If you have it, flaunt it," and the other is not. The spirito site belongs to a company that espouses the latter, and indeed has developed two distinct approaches to the question. Artigiano's answer is to hew to the undemonstrative, quiet classics in garment patterns, and the Spirito de Artigiano side of the house elaborates on that tactic by adding ells of extra fabric to each piece of clothing. The overall effect is attractive and pleasant: spirito clothing is unintimidating to wear and easy to look at, and it brands the wearer as an eminently sensible woman.
spirito's color choices in dresses show the muted quality of the garments quite well, including only these four links to clothes grouped by hues: beige, black, blue and brown. There is one cranberry-colored dress, true, but that is the high end of spirito's jewel tone palette. Some of the dark items are unobtrusively printed with small flowers or spots, but the overall effect is anything but flashy. The prices are mostly to be found between eighty-nine and one hundred fifty-nine pounds, and the quality is exactly suited to that range. spirito also carries shoes, and if you recall the more basic designs put out by Ferragamo and Bandolino during the 1980s, you have seen what spirito has to offer in footwear.
