specsavers calls itself "the UK's Most Trusted Optician," it is certainly the UK's largest optician, and it is now celebrating its twenty-seventh year in the optical business. The business was founded by a husband-and-wife team who had operated a small regional group of retail optical stores before starting a new chain of stores to sell discount eyewear nationally. Their idea was a simple one: to offer the same services as an individual optician would, but to do it more cheaply because frames and optical glass could be purchased for a whole group of stores. specsavers' growth has been phenomenal because it's exponential, expanding from two stores in 1984 to one hundred stores in 1988, seven hundred in 2005, and currently almost fourteen hundred stores worldwide employing twenty-six thousand people. One of the partners, Mary Perkins, became the female equivalent of a soap baronet when she was made a Dame Commander in 2007, perhaps the ultimate stamp of respectability in business.
specsavers focuses on cheap glasses (women's and men's both start at twenty-five pounds), and offers a flock of special deals like two pairs of glasses starting at seventy pounds, free Pentax varifocal lenses, twenty-five percent discount given to senior citizens, and so on. Even the designer (Tommy Hilfiger, Red or Dead, fcuk, Bench, Quiksilver, Roxy, Jasper Conran and Missoni) glasses start at a hundred pounds, and since altogether specsavers has over fifteen hundred different styles available, it can satisfy any conceivable taste in optical designs. Of course specsavers owns its own laboratories to grind the lenses, and they've agreed to use Pentax lenses unless otherwise specified, so that explains the amazing offer on varifocals. That's exactly the type of cost benefit the specsavers business model was designed to achieve, and it's very satisfying to see such a sound and simple plan bear fruit in the real world. specsavers has a service it calls Lensmail, which delivers contact lenses directly to the customer's home. That's a perfect arrangement for maintaining a steady supply of disposable lenses.
The specsavers site has a few interesting promotions, chiefly its "Spectacle Wearer of the Year Contest" in which it accepts photographic entries of persons wearing its glasses.
