Spaghetti House (Spaghettihouse.co.uk)
The spaghettihouse site belongs to the chain of Italian restaurants (or ristoranti, as the store locator would have it) spread throughout London. spaghettihouse has ten ristoranti to be found on streets like Bryanston, Duke, and Goodge (the original store), in Haymarket, in Knightsbridge, and so on. It would be fair to call them "conveniently located," then, and the unpretentious Spaghetti House name bodes well for the honesty of the fare. In fact, the name would lead one to think the stores serve unabashedly British interpretations of Italian cuisine, but according to the spaghettihouse site, the chain has come by its Italian cuisine (and ristoranti) in an honest manner since it was founded by two northern Italians in 1955. One of the founders used to work at Quaglino's and the other at the Savoy, so there is no question whatsoever about quality in the spaghettihouse lineage. The food is good, it really is Italian, and moreover it's reasonably priced. One presumes the original restaurant probably replicated the trattoria experience (checked tablecloths, candle stub in a Chianti bottle, photographs of Rome hanging on the walls, dusty plastic grapes stuck here and there), and indeed when spaghettihouse was a new ristorante, Londoners were much less familiar with Italian cuisine. Today the exotic bloom has worn off and the spaghettihouse locations are large and brightly lit, but the authenticity and flavor of real Italian cooking remain.
The spaghettihouse site is very well organized, with an introduction to the company helpfully located on the home page and a sensibly divided set of menu links on the Menu page (A La Carte, Wine & Drinks, Children's, Parties, and Dessert). However, it is on this page that spaghettihouse's incessantly rotating flash images become downright annoying, and further annoyance results when the spaghettihouse a la carte menu, which should not have to be downloaded as a portable document file, refuses to open for any of three reader programs. It's maddening, because the children's menu behaves properly and looks delicious, and it's varied to boot, with friendly anthropomorphized cartoons of food items. Best of all, the food choices are given their proper Italian names, and everyone knows spaghetti pomodoro tastes better than pasta with tomato sauce.
