Food is a great mitigator against being overcome by alcohol. After a couple pints, the body starts to send some signals that can be interpreted in a variety of ways. One school of thought involves blind indulgence. Strong ales entice the drinker to part with reason in favor of a baize fare approach to further pint consumption. At this point a drinker must call upon the inner chowhound to intervene. A delicious pub burger with a side of mash or chips is enough to mitigate any predisposition toward goofballery. The consumption of food after a couple pints of ale is like the proverbial bedside cigarette. The stimulatory effects of hops and barley elevate the food on the palette.
