Converse is a shoe company that has been in the spotlight for years. If you have ever looked upon an old photograph of a high school basketball team, you have probably seen some converse shoes. You see, the old canvas and rubber shoes those guys are wearing are probably Converse. The most prolific design launched by the company was a brand called All-Stars. The shoes were simple enough. They were constructed primarily of heavy grade canvas. The sole of the shoe was fabricated from molded rubber. The rubber seemed almost to have been melted onto the canvas upper. The simplicity of the design allowed them to be manufactured cheaply. The shoes were reasonably comfortable, but the real selling point was the low price. The shoes were available in a multitude of colors, which allowed kids to match them to their school’s colors. Eventually the shoes were renamed in honor of a famous ballplayer named Chuck. The shoes were called Chuck Taylor’s, and were often endearingly referenced as simply ‘Chuck’s”
The shoes have made a cult comeback of sorts. Skateboarders in the nineteen nineties again lent credibility to this humble shoe. The same reasons seem to apply. The shoes were economical and simple. Because they are cheap, kids are able to wear them as long as they feel expressive. Once they have changed their mantra, they can broadcast it with a different pair of Converse shoes. A skull and crossbones print might supplant a pastel yellow in the teenager’s closet. There is no reason to question the metamorphosis. Simply throw the old pair of Converse to the dump, and embrace the individuality of the newly chosen pair.
