Gaming at drinking establishments has been a mainstay of leisure life for decades. Playing pool, darts, and other bar games are one of the oldest recreational activities in the UK. Pool is game that is based on a felt covered slate. The slate is heavy and thick, and has been made smooth with abrasives. The slate is covered with a stretchy felt material. Traditionally the felt used was green. Many tables have been issued with a custom color like red, or tan. The felt is also used to cover the perimeter of the surface, called bumpers. Bumpers are rubber cushions that are oriented in an angular fashion. In practice, they provide a springy, pointed surface to take the impact of the balls. To play the game, fifteen multi-colored balls are placed on top of the playing surface. Seven of the balls are solid, and seven balls are striped. One ball is a solid black color. The balls are numbered one through fifteen. There is a solid white ball, called the object or cue ball. The object ball is struck with a tapered wooden stick, or cue. The cue can be customized according to player preference. The length, weight, and taper characteristics can all be modified for a custom fit. The tip of the wooden cue is topped with a thick piece of leather. The small disc of leather is sanded with an abrasive to produce a rough surface. The surface is then rubbed with a chalky substance that is color-matched to the felt table cover. The leather point of contact sends the cue ball in the direction dictated by the cue angle, in relation to the ball. The ball strikes another of the number balls, in an attempt to cause it to fall into one of the six perimeter pockets. Various games are played with varying strategies. The moist popular game in UK bars is eight ball. In this game, one player is responsible for pocketing the striped balls, and the other person is responsible for pocketing the solid balls. After making your designated series of balls, the black eight ball must be made. The player completing this task in the fewest number of shots, wins the game.
