primark offers solidly unexceptional clothing at low prices, and it occupies the same market niche as American retailer J. C. Penney, even operating its Irish stores under the name Penneys. primark is the retail arm of a large seller of foodstuffs and ingredients called Associated British Foods, which of course has its corporate headquarters in London, and has over two hundred ten physical storefronts. The primark site puts an emphasis on "ethical trading" which seems unusual for a discount clothing site which keeps prices down by manufacturing its own product lines, and a little research reveals the reason: the BBC ran a 2008 special on primark's Indian supply factories. That special was very uncomplimentary to primark, portraying the company as profiting from sweatshop labor, and primark thereafter was the target of a great deal of public opprobrium. As it happens, three years later that BBC special was ruled deceptive, but by then the damage to primark had long been done, and as a consequence primark put a lot of effort into remaking its image in terms of social responsibility. primark even claims to enforce a code of conduct for the companies which manufacture its clothes, including provisions like no forced or underage labor, freedom to unionize, physically suitable premises, no excessive pollution, fair wages, no ridiculously long hours, no discrimination or objectionable behavior toward employees, and conforming to all local laws. What's amazing is how many employees in developed countries could also benefit from enforcement of some of primark's requirements.
primark's frequently asked questions list explains that its minimal pricing comes not because it exploits cheap labor, but because it does not advertise and it buys in large quantities, which makes sense given the number of retail outlets primark maintains in addition to its web retail business. primark's primary area of operation is of course the UK and Ireland, but it also has a presence in Spain, Germany, Portugal and Belgium. Interestingly, primark points out that it can snag a new style it's seen on the runway and, because of its network of suppliers, turn that around into retail product very quickly (sometimes in six weeks, even).
