Post Office (Postoffice.co.uk)

It's amazing to see the expanded range of postoffice's financial services, considering the original 1861 limit on postal savings accounts was one hundred fifty pounds total with individual deposits limited to thirty pounds per annum. By 1927, no less than twelve million Britons were saving a total of two hundred eighty-three million pounds (with an average account balance of twenty-eight and a half pounds), and naive girls in novels were constantly turning over their postal savings to smooth-talking fellows who were never heard from again. Today, postoffice offers a variety of options, including finance products (such as savings, mortgages and other loans, credit cards, and travellers cheques), insurance policies (car, van and even motorcycle insurance, homeowners coverage, travel and life insurance, business policies and even coverage for one's pets), telephone (both landline and broadband services), and of course one can always mail a letter or a parcel, or pay taxes and fees over the counter. The postoffice is owned by Royal Mail, of course, and although it recently closed twenty-five hundred local offices it still maintains eleven thousand five hundred open branches. Customers can use the postoffice website, call postoffice directly, or simply visit a local store as nineteen million people do every day in the UK.

The enhanced array of financial offerings is a result of the 2009 "People's Bank" initiative, which intended to extend different types of service to lower-income customers not targeted by traditional banks. That postoffice rollout drew some fire because it had tacked on the new products to an existing contract with the Bank of Ireland, and would thus send half the profits of the venture to another country. What's interesting is the fact the US mortgage crisis and ensuing financial disaster helped ensure the postoffice financial products were not eliminated, as had been proposed prior to the global recession that shook so many banks worldwide. Lord Mandelson had communicated the idea to Gordon Brown, pointing out that customers would feel confident that postoffice accounts would remain stable, and if the postoffice attracted more accounts and earned more money, the government would be able to reduce the amount by which the postoffice is subsidized.
