The portland-direct.co.uk site redirects to a site called thomson.co.uk, and that is because portland, which was owned by the same parent company (TUI Travel) has closed portland as of May 30, 2011, ending thirty years of portland holidays. Although thomson claims its offers the same travel packages as portland once did, it's still a sad occasion for all loyal portland customers to see that brand and website disappear. portland helped customers travel to at least fifty-seven different exotic locations including Algarve, Lanzarote, Majorca, Costa De La Luz, Marrakech, Samos, the Dominican Republic, Tunisia, Dalaman, Ibiza, and Kefalonia. But these options can be found on thomson's "Portland Holidays" page, which organizes its portland choices using the following links: Tenerife, Florida, Egypt, Spain, Sensatori, Platinum, Family, and Cruises. The Sensatori link goes to a page explaining the Sensatori hotel chain, consisting of four establishments in Crete, Mexico, Tenerife (apparently a popular destination) and Sharm El Sheikh, the luxury resort from which deposed Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was forcibly removed in August. thomson mentions this nowhere, but it is worth noting there were travel advisories out for British citizens thinking of visiting Egypt during much of 2011, and the absence of any such warning for the Sharm El Sheikh Sensatori suggests that area was considered reasonably secure. Sensatori is actually quite an interesting choice for portland to have made, simply because portland built its reputation as a provider of cheap travel and Sensatori, as the pretentious name suggests, is a classic example of that lodging type generally called the "luxury hotel."
thomson's version of the old portland Florida vacation includes the three major theme parks located in that state, which of course are Disney, Universal and Seaworld. That explains the Minnie Mouse character and the Mouseketeer hats seen in thomson's Florida link, although the description of the Florida tours available would be improved by looking up the spelling of Dr. Seuss' last name. US customers will find thomson's glowing presentation of the state of Florida most amusing, as that state is known for its excessively rural nature rather than its "mini-resorts" and "chic" cities. However, thomson is entirely correct in raving over Florida beaches, many of which escaped a coating of oil from BP's Macondo well last year.
