Mini Barratts (Minibarratts.co.uk)
The minibarratts site, and the associated Barratts brand, until very recently belonged to a long-established group of shoe vendors known as Stylo (based in Bradford), which bought a company called W Barratt in 1964. Stylo and Barratts both declared bankruptcy in 2009, unfortunately, but Stylo at least made an attempt to repay its creditors. Stylo's reorganizational plan was viewed favorably by those creditors (primarily its landlords), in fact, because it included a restructuring of its property leases that was intended to reduce the businesses' outstanding liabilities. While Stylo's stores continued to operate, so the plan went, their landlords would be able to search for new tenants, and if some were found the Stylo store at that location would close out. This attempt to avoid pre-pack administration failed, however, when a vote of creditors showed insufficient support, and as a result of that negative vote Stylo was forced into prepack administration. Interestingly, some of its own managers purchased 160 of the Stylo stores in a leveraged buyout, and the minibarratts site is part of that continuing business effort. One has to admire the spirit that keeps Barratts, and minibarratts, going under economically unfavorable conditions, but of course the new management team is betting that without the old lease debts, the Barratts stores will once again be a going concern. And if Barratts can shift enough retail trade onto the web, it can avoid the type of overextension that ended Stylo.
To look at the minibarratts site, one would never know the operator was weathering a severe crisis. minibarratts sells children's shoes (as the site says, Children's, Kids, Girls and Boys shoes, although surely the last three specifications are unnecessary), and the array of twenty-seven pink Peppa Pig products is just as gaily shiny as though no financial problems loomed in the background. The secret of minibarratts is the cheapness of its wares. Even the Peppa Pig shoes, which will naturally cost more because they're branded with the popular character, are only ten and fifteen pounds for boots, and a couple of pairs even dip into the low five and six pound range.
