Foyles (Foyles.co.uk)
Nothing but superlatives will do for the foyles site, which belongs to the bookstore of that name located in Charing Cross Road. If you love books so much you'd like to dive into a sea of Penguins and never emerge again, foyles' store is where you've always wanted to live. If your access must remain virtual, the foyles site is a very inviting substitute. It understands perfectly that the only images book lovers want to see portray dust jackets, and selects its JPEG files accordingly. In fact, foyles is a perfect Sargasso, capable of ensnaring and marooning the shopper in pleasant buying decisions for impractically lengthy periods of time, since what the store does not carry is either not worth carrying or impossibly rare and thus not a consumer item. The foyles site is filled with readable words, and many of them are used to narrow down the online retail experience. For example, there are no less than seven categories of children's books alone, and here are two samples: "Children's & young adult fiction & true stories" and "Children's & young adult poetry, anthologies, annuals." There is no chance of not finding one's way given such explicit signposts, although some categories are so extensive there's no way to begin to review all the choices. For example, in the seven Children's categories combined, foyles currently offers almost a quarter million products for sale, which is a genuinely staggering number of individual books.
The history of the foyles business is wonderfully entertaining in its own right, and it receives its due in a full page of closely printed type, with period photographs. foyles came about in 1903 when two brothers simultaneously failed to pass their examinations for the civil service and, accepting defeat, tried to sell their used textbooks by way of a print advertisement. They received so many responses it inspired them to continue the business venture, and so foyles was born. The intensely detailed taxonomy of the stock available on the foyles site suggests the company could, without missing a beat, go into the lending library business... and that is precisely what the brothers did in 1934, lending books for tuppence each.
