The ford site belongs, of course, to the automotive manufacturer of that name, and it's surprising to see how helpful it is in making purchasing decisions. One would think the idea of a website would be antithetical to the product itself, because there's no way to test-drive a car in a virtual environment, but the depth of product information Ford can provide in this manner would be hard to acquire without a site. Research would require reviewing material published by the manufacturer and trade publications, as well as finding other customer's opinions and details about the cars themselves at the showroom. The ford site does all that running around for the customer, offering photographs, detailed specs on the cars themselves, financing and warranty options, promotional sales and used vehicle sales, and so on. Ford of course has its own finance company (and with its lowest standard price hovering around eighty-five hundred pounds, almost everyone does finance purchases), and that's the real untold story of the ford site. Ford Credit has been the UK version of Ford Motor Credit since 1963, and from the point of view of putting customers in Ford cars, Ford Credit is a natural outgrowth for the business. The temptation to make money not only on the automobile itself but also on lending the customer money to buy it was irresistibly strong, and that's understandable.
Equally obvious, though, is the caveat to Ford the manufacturer: Cobbler, stick to your last. Consumer lending is an altogether different line of country, and the very last place a manufacturer wants to be during a global ice age in business is holding a lot of paper that depends on the average Joe being able to hold down a job. The Joes and Janes who see themselves behind the wheel of a Fiesta or a Focus are being thrown out of work through no fault of their own in record numbers, with no immediate prospects of new employment. Additionally, the specter of GMAC's catastrophic downfall resonates with Ford Credit more than any other finance company, and it is a great tribute to Ford's excellent management that not just its financing arm but its business as a whole has survived to date.
