First Capital Connect (Firstcapitalconnect.co.uk)

The firstcapitalconnect site provides a customer interface for that branch of FirstGroup PLC which operates trains moving among the London, Brighton, Bedford, Peterborough, Cambridge and King's Lynn areas. The coverage makes perfect linear sense when one views the handy downloadable route map. One tends to take Great Britain's incredibly complex and comprehensive rail system for granted until one receives a vivid reminder like the route map. Unfortunately, the map exists only in as a portable document file, and what customers expect from a railway company's website is a clearly designed, simple to use interactive route planner. It should be easy to choose one station as a departure point and another as a destination, then see a resulting list of start times, end times and the corresponding time for each rail journey. Instead, the "Plan Your Journey" page has a link to "Live departure and arrival times," which page contains three text boxes. One can type in two station names (the "Journey" option) or select from a drop-down list of two routes to find the current start and end times of the train now underway. The firstcapitalconnect site has missed two major customer service opportunities here to provide interactive information the customer needs, obviously. It is poor web design not to provide a drop-down for known text items like station names, and to aggravate the offense the station name pops up in its entirety after manual data entry has been completed.

On the other hand, once the chore of entering stations is done, one does see part of the desired travel information, a schedule of departures appropriate for the time of day. Both arrival times and journey durations are conspicuously absent, and that easily remediated defect could have been avoided by giving a few moments' thought to what an actual customer would want to know when viewing the web page. The route drop-down box is similarly hampered by the paucity of information revealed. firstcapitalconnect operates two portions of railway route, the Thameslink (London Bridge to Sutton Surrey) and the Great Northern (no information returned by this query, regrettably, and it is impossible to believe the Great Northern line no longer runs on weekends).
