If the findmypast genealogy research site looks familiar, that's not odd, because you have seen it before-- the design, rather than this specific site. There's nothing that says generic and directly out of the box quite like this layout and color range, and although the site credit (to "brightsolid online publishing limited") applies to content, it could equally well describe what the site looks like. The obvious bottom line on whether or not this site gives good value is how many documents one can see for the price, and for what period of time. The service is not cheap, and the subscriptions are structured to nudge the customer into the most expensive option ("Full," one year's access to all available records for one hundred ten pounds). The document categories given under "Full" are as follows: census records (1841-1901, 1911), "Births, Marriages & Deaths," military records, address directories, school and employment records, memberships, parish records, and passport records. As one might expect, the coverage is spotty. What findmypast has to offer in the way of research materials is what they could get in digital form, which does not necessarily coincide with what any one particular person needs to trace a family's history.
What's most interesting about the findmypast site is its family tree rendering, which is based on a standard file type known as GEDCOM. The GEDCOM file is a plain text file, and if you've ever had to transfer data in and out of software that lacked an import and export function, you've worked with similar files. The standard is, as standards tend to be, freely available online. It takes minimal programming experience to write a simple Visual Basic file that runs on any Windows computer and whisks your data in and out of the GEDCOM format. However, if the customer doesn't have such experience, or wants to see his or her data arranged in a traditional family tree format, what findmypast will do is not only render that data in just that way, but also let the customer work in that interface. findmypast also offers 200 mb of data storage, so it's possible to treat this as an online genealogy workspace.
