The idea behind fatattack is a popular one: it's a weekend of diet and exercise offered as a means of controlling weight and encouraging personal fitness. It advertises "World Champion Class Fighters" as instructors, spartan accommodations unless the customer pays more, and promises nothing. Indeed, fatattack doesn't need to promise anything, because as long as participants follow the prescribed regimen without succumbing to heart failure, they'll receive everything they pay for. They're unlikely to be overcome by heat exhaustion, because the facilities (bunkhouse, mess hall, and some outdoor exercise equipment) are located conveniently close to Great Britain's highway system, although the irony of driving to a fitness camp seems lost on the earnest fatattack site. The obedient joggers and weight-lifters are more likely to spend a soggy weekend bouncing around in the great outdoors, or perhaps freezing in the snow; it's telling that the photographs show people in anoraks and woolen skiing caps. In fact, if you've ever read a John Le Carre novel, the fatattack grounds resemble nothing so much as one of his rural spy training centers, which we are supposed to believe provide the British secret service with expertise in unarmed murder, stealthy creeping about hostile countries, and other useful black arts for subterranean warfare.
The fatattack program is nothing if not flexible. One may come for a day or a weekend, and choose to train with both men and women or women only (unless, of course, you yourself are male). There's a Basic package available (bunk beds, "healthy" meals) as well as a substantially more expensive Plus option (upgrade to hotel rooms, same dining experience, some spa amenities like massage which are not included in the Plus price). One can book an entire group in for simultaneous shared training (the bridal and corporate options). To someone whose idea of exercise is walking twenty blocks maximum, some of the modes of exercise promulgated by fatattack sound intimidating and possibly painful, for example "kettlebell endurance." The kettlebell looks very much like a cannonball with a thick, rounded iron handle, and swinging it hither and yon is a form of exercise. It seems clear from the photograph that simply lifting a kettlebell would be a fairly strenuous activity; the notion of heaving one about for any length of time seems positively suicidal.
